Image formats and mobile compound photos

File formats and compound-photo capabilities are listed separately. SEF and Motion Photo describe container capabilities, not filename extensions.

  • JPG/JPEG: standard photos plus validated Samsung SEF, Android Motion Photo/MicroVideo, Dynamic Depth, and Ultra HDR.
  • PNG: standard still images and transparency.
  • GIF and WebP: still and animated images, preserving frames, timing, and looping.
  • BMP: accepted for upload, stripped of metadata, and converted to a WebP display version.
  • HEIC/HEIF and AVIF: accepted and converted to a WebP display version; valid Motion Photo/mpvd content is supported.
  • A compound photo with one complete video can play a transcoded MP4; metadata-only SEF remains a still image.
  • When Keep original is selected, the compound source downloads as an attachment; direct links, thumbnails, and social previews still use the safe still image. Apple Live Photo photo+MOV pairing is not currently supported.
  • Damaged files, unknown trailing data, and suspicious polyglots are rejected.
